Like most aspiring authors, I do not have a wealthy sponsor to tuck me away in a private villa while I work on my literary masterpieces. Writing must be fit around more mundane tasks, like for example going to work. For the record, I love my job. My boss is fantastic, my co-workers are people I’m willing to hang out with after work, and who wouldn’t love working with puppies all day long? The job isn’t the problem. It’s the whole concept of waking up in order to go to it.
What’s worse is, if I want to write, I have to get up even earlier. My least favorite part of the day? 6AM. My husband compares me to the robot from Wall-E before his batteries are charged. I remain that way until either a cold shower has blasted me into a vague sort of alertness, or I get a cup of coffee.
Guess which option is my favorite.
I’m currently nursing cup number two as I work on this post, and try not to think too hard on chapter three. (I know what needs to happen. I don’t know how to say it.) Coffee gets me going in the morning, and without it my writing would be drastically reduced. What do you do to give your writing a boost?

Coffee and I have a love/hate relationship. I love it. It hates me. Still, I drink it especially when I’m writing. It helps me focus. I don’t necessarily have to drink it. There’s something about the smell of it that keeps me on track.

Coffee. A cup of Joe. Liquid gold. Elixir of life. The all mighty and wonderful hot caffeinated drink. My creamy and slightly sweet morning pick-me-up. That happy little concoction that makes “Monster Mommy” go away. The oh so delightful potion that dribbles from the magic black box on the counter. Have I mentioned coffee yet?

I think it was Creative Penn? Who said- find a song that inspires you and gets you going. I have found Wolfmother – Vagabond, gets me going. I remember the scene in 500 days of Summer, when he is lying on the bed, despondent and out of work. This song comes on, and he gets inspired and MOVES and CREATES. So I listen to that song, eyes closed, visualize the character being inspired and creating.

Spend ten minutes getting all the detritus out of your brain. Let it run free before you need to reign it in to create within your novel’s boundaries.

Ha! We love it too much! When I don’t feel like getting out of bed in the morning (every morning), the thought of sipping a cup of coffee lifts me right out of the bed and transports me to the coffee pot where the day begins with pleasure. Mr. Coffee puts it out quickly enough. Bunn does it better, but Bunn burned up. Alas!

I also love coffee. I also wouldn’t like my day without my beautiful cup of coffee.

I love the coffee idea. I just add dark chocolate with it. Yum. 🙂 Have fun this summer writing away. 🙂
