If you’ve been following this workshop, you probably have a decent rough draft for a character. You know his or her name, what he does for a living, and how he acts. More or less. You may not feel comfortable in his skin yet, but not to worry, that comes with today’s post.
Instead of advising you on how best to step inside the skin of your character, we are going to conduct a small roleplay in the comments. Please use the character you developed in this workshop. It’s okay if a sci-fi character meets up with a present day earth Pastor. It’s okay if the situation is so far removed from what your character would normally encounter it’s almost laughable. Your only goal is to stay as true to your character as possible. ^^ Er…without killing everyone in the room. That’s not really fair now is it?
Here is the story line:
Your character wakes up in a dark alley surrounded by all the other characters, also waking up. The streets appear to be abandoned. A message written in dark red on the alley wall reads, “Repent! The end is near!”
Shuffling by, what appears to be a zombie is groaning its way in the opposite direction. Yes my friends, it’s the zombie apocolypse.
Have fun!
(Oh yeah, hubbie picked the theme so it was as much of a surprise for me as everyone else.)

“Daddy, why are we here?”
Others were awake. It wasn’t clear whether anyone had slept. Certainly not Darrell, a father with his 5-year-old boy to protect. He’d tried to reach his wife at home, but she hadn’t answered her cell phone. What had happened no one seemed to know. The alley was suddenly occupied by confused drivers that had abandoned their cars to seek shelter when it happened. Rocking cars, breaking concrete, broken water lines, and crumbling buildings! The road was impossible to navigate. No traffic could be seen on the road after hours had passed. Obviously, nothing had changed since this disaster occurred.
“Don’t you remember, Samuel? We couldn’t drive home last night. An earthquake or something happened. I don’t know what it was yet. We left the car and came here.”
“I remember, Daddy. I want Mommy. Can’t we go home?” Samuel held back tears. He wanted to be strong like his daddy. Daddy was always strong. Samuel looked up at his father.
Darrell picked up the boy and hugged him. He walked down the alley to speak with others rambling around talking together in little groups. As he began walking in the direction of the closest people, he noticed a sign on the wall written in red that said “Repent! The end is near!” Darrell read it. Amazingly, it comforted him. Surely God was in control. He always was. Darrell was sure of this. He hugged Samuel again.
“We’ll be fine, Samuel,” Darrell said. “Mommy will be fine, too.”
“What’s that, Daddy?” Samuel asked pointing at a strange looking creature, not quite human, more animal-like, shuffling on two legs.
“I’m not sure what that is, Samuel,” Darrell said as he headed in another direction quickly away from the monster-like being that was now staring at Samuel and Darrell.
Darrell slowed his approach toward the others wondering if the strange creature was the only one of its kind. An uncomfortable feeling of danger, danger Darrell didn’t understand, swept over him. He hugged his son and wished they were both together at home and this was yesterday. Yesterday. Would there be a tomorrow that was anything like yesterday? Darrell prayed and hugged his son.
